As a boy, I had several notable outings with a kite, but I had no idea that a kite would become central to my adult working life. That happened later, while studying art and design at Newcastle in 1972. Fellow student Ray Merry and I experimented with various materials and structures observing their movement in the wind. There was no specific design intent, but this led, almost by accident, to a new sort of kite that we subsequently patented. It became the first product of The Flexifoil Kite Company and it is still manufactured today. For over 30 years I have been involved in the power kite industry designing kites with the express purpose of pulling hard under maximum control. I still enjoy the thrill of powerful kites, but I am returning to those experimental roots, to explore the wind for its own sake... About the sculptures >>
